KAI Tim Mälzer Kamagata Knives

The Tim Mälzer Kamagata collection focuses on clarity, efficiency, and practical performance in everyday kitchen work. Designed by Tim Mälzer and developed in Japan over several years, the series centres around a distinctive sickle-shaped blade profile, reflected in the name “Kamagata.” The pronounced curvature gives the knives a clear visual identity while also supporting a smooth, rocking cutting motion.

The blades are made from 4116 stainless steel, hardened to approximately 56 HRC, offering durability, ease of maintenance, and consistent cutting performance. Combined with a black POM handle, the overall design is streamlined and uncluttered, prioritising functionality and workflow efficiency over decorative detail.

Our Personal Opinion

Handling the Kamagata knives, the first impression is how straightforward and practical they feel. There is no excess detail or ornamentation, just a clean blade shape and a comfortable, stable handle. The curved profile becomes noticeable as soon as you start cutting, particularly during rocking motions, where the blade moves fluidly without feeling exaggerated.

The POM handle gives the knife a different character compared to wooden-handled ranges. It feels solid, secure, and easy to maintain, making it well suited to busy kitchen environments. The balance is slightly handle-forward, which adds to the sense of control during repetitive tasks.

In use, the 4116 steel delivers consistent, predictable performance. It sharpens easily and feels resilient, making it practical for everyday cooking rather than delicate, specialist work. As a collection, Kamagata feels designed for efficiency and workflow, offering dependable performance in a streamlined, modern format that prioritises function over flourish.
