Kai Shun Nagare Knives
The Shun Nagare knife collection showcases Kai’s ability to combine advanced Japanese blade-making with a highly distinctive visual identity. Handmade in Japan, the series sits within Kai’s high-end range and is defined by its technically complex construction and refined finish. Each blade is formed from 72 layers of Damascus steel using VG2 and VG10, delivering excellent sharpness, edge retention, and long-term cutting performance.
What immediately sets Shun Nagare apart is the radial Damascus pattern that flows across the highly polished blade surface. Rather than running solely along the cutting edge, the layered steel forms a striking, almost symmetrical pattern that gives the blade a sense of depth and movement. Paired with a mottled grey-black pakkawood handle, the result is a knife that feels deliberately sculpted, reinforcing its position among Kai’s most visually distinctive and technically ambitious collections. This combination of craftsmanship and design was formally recognised with a German Design Award Special Mention in 2017.

Our Personal Opinion
After handling and using the Shun Nagare range as a whole, the sense of precision and consistency across the collection is immediately apparent. Despite the complexity of the blade construction and the visual boldness of the Damascus patterning, the knives feel composed and balanced in hand, with a reassuring stability that carries across the different blade shapes. There’s a noticeable solidity to the range, but without the knives feeling heavy or cumbersome during use.
In person, the radial Damascus pattern is far more intricate than it appears in photographs. The way the layered steel catches the light across the polished blade surface gives the knives a depth and texture that’s difficult to fully capture on screen. In use, the edges feel clean and confident, delivering smooth, controlled cuts that reflect the quality of the steel and the precision of the grind. Taken as a complete collection, Shun Nagare feels deliberately engineered and visually distinctive, with a level of refinement that becomes more evident the more time you spend handling and working with the knives.
